从某种意义上讲，他们是当之无愧的美国另类摇滚之父。

“浅睡中眼球转动”的英文缩写就是R. E.M.。1980年，来自乔治亚大学的四位小伙子选定了这三个字母做他们乐队的名字，这就注定了他们的音乐拥有着梦一般的气质：飘逸、放浪、又裹着些许甜蜜的忧伤。

他们的音乐秉承了优良的民谣气质，同时又在形式上大胆突破。跳动的吉他、坚实的贝司线条，以及主唱魅力四射的吟唱，交织出一首首似梦似真、直击心灵的旋律。正是这种特立独行的气质使R.E.M.和Nirvana一同在80年代吹响了非主流音乐的号角。
