Wuhan, Hubei Province, China, Date Unknown
  Photograph by Bruce Dale
A young child carries a red balloon on October 1, the anniversary of the day communist leader Mao Zedong inaugurated the People\'s Republic of China in 1949. The proclamation came after half a century of conflict: the fall of the last Chinese emperor, the Japanese invasion, World War II, and a civil war between communist and nationalist forces. The second half of the 20th century was no more peaceful as the new government attempted to rebuild and unify the country under communism\'s strict guidelines.

  Sarichef Island, Alaska, Date Unknown
  Photograph by George F. Mobley
The livid light of late October illuminates Shishmaref Inlet, located just 21 miles (34 kilometers) south of the Arctic Circle. The Inuit living in the village of Shishmaref may soon be the first refugees of global warming. Rising sea levels and the melting of permafrost are causing their island to quickly erode into the Chukchi Sea.

  Petty Harbour, Newfoundland, 1970
  Photograph by Sam Abell
At harvest time, a farmer starts his day on a Petty Harbour farm. Located on the east coast of Newfoundland, far from the Canadian mainland, Petty Harbour sits on the Grand Banks, an undersea shelf that is the favored home of a great number of fish and the secret, millennium-old destination of European fisherman.

Stomness Whaling Station, South Georgia Island, Falkland Islands, 1998
  Photograph by Maria Stenzel
Seals inhabit an abandoned whaling station on South Georgia\'s Stromness Bay. The whaling station on South Georgia was the only hope of survival for Ernest Shackleton and his crew who were trapped on ice floes for 9 months over 800 miles away from inhabited land.

  Zambezi River, 1996
  Photograph by Chris Johns
A baby African elephant takes a sand bath along the banks of the Zambezi River, where poachers wreak havoc on the elephant population. Armed with AK-47s, poachers hunt adult male elephants, cut their heads off, then hack away at their tusks leaving the massive bodies to the vultures, hyenas, and lions.

  Photograph by James L. Stanfield
Beehives decorated with carved masks line an open-air ethnographic museum in Roznov pod Radhostem. Celebrating turn-of-the-century life, the museum recreates a typical village from the Wallachia region in the hilly forests and pastures of the Czech Republic\'s far eastern corner.

  Sahara Desert, Niger, 1997
  Photograph by George Steinmetz
"Boundless stretches of sand are the highways of Saharan Niger. Less than 500 miles [805 kilometers] of major paved roads serve a nation three times as large as California. Below the horizon a caravan heads for the town of Bilma to take on salt, a prized commodity. Another train laden with salt and other trade items heads toward markets at the desert\'s edge."

"Young males play fight on the Hudson Bay shore in a harmless autumn prelude to spring battles for mates that can end in shattered limbs. Lethargic all summer, males may benefit from such exercise and also learn to assess other bears\' strength."
