虫”，既非动物也非植物，和细菌或微生物也不同，是一种更接近生命原体的群体。他们没有固定的形态和性质，只有在和人类世界接触、并且产生超越人类认识的现象时，才能让人类感知其存在。

“虫师”银古，行走在“人”和“虫”之间，坚信着“生命不是为了威胁到其他生命，而是为了维持自己的延续而存在于世”。他云游四方，对“虫”的生命形态，生存方式进行研究，并接受人的委托，解决可能是由虫引起的怪异事件。

漆原友纪先生在创作《虫师》时的一段话：“思考这个故事的时候，突然想起了以前去白川乡时候的事。日落后的深山非常寂静，而故乡明朗的色调、人们温暖的话语、深深的夜色、朝雾和鲜艳的阳光以及昆虫抑扬顿挫的鸣声......一时万分分明。”
