金鱼是由鲫鱼长期人工培养和选育出来的一类观赏鱼。依其外部形态和亲缘关系的远近 ，可归纳为5大类型 ：①普金鲫型（草金）金鱼 。体形和鳍与金鲫相同或尾鳍延长。有红、白、红白相间、玻璃和五彩等花色。主要有红鲫和燕尾两型，红鲫是金鱼的祖先。②文金鲫型（文金）金鱼。体短而圆；眼球不凸出；有背鳍；臀鳍和尾鳍都成双叶。体色多为红、红黑、红白、紫和五彩等。品种曾达60个以上。可分为文鱼（纹鱼）、虎头、高头、朱顶紫罗袍、鹤顶红、珍珠、玉印头、翻鳃、粉色牡丹、文鱼球等，其中著名种有鹤顶红、虎头及珍珠等。③龙金鲫型（龙睛）金鱼。龙睛自古被当作金鱼的正宗。体短；眼球发达，凸出于眼眶外；有背鳍；臀鳍和尾鳍，均呈双叶。体色多为红、红黑和红白杂斑等。品种曾达50个以上，分为凤尾龙睛、墨龙睛、喜鹊龙睛、玛瑙眼、葡萄眼、灯泡眼、虎头龙睛、龙睛球、龙睛翻鳃等。其中以墨龙睛和虎头龙睛最珍贵。④蛋金鲫型（蛋金）金鱼。金鱼中的另一大类，体短，圆似鸭蛋；眼平直，不凸出于眼眶外；无背鳍；臀鳍和尾鳍都呈双叶。品种曾达70多个，可分为红蛋、蛋球（绒球蛋）、凤蛋、宝石眼、元宝红、裙边红、齐鳃红、粉面、隐砂红、宝石印、翻鳃、狮子滚球、水泡眼 、狮子头、鹅头等，其中以水泡眼、狮子头、鹅头、蛋球等为名贵品种。⑤龙背金鲫型金鱼。体短；眼球凸出；无背鳍 ；尾鳍呈双叶。可分为朝天龙（望天眼）、龙背、龙背灯泡眼、虎头龙背灯泡眼、蛤蟆头等，其中以龙背灯泡眼较为名贵。
