在1970年夏天,于Sunapee渡假的Steve Tyler,结识了在冰淇淋店打工的Joe Perry,两人在共同欣赏一场当地的小型演唱会后,决定组团.然后Perry介绍了原本跟他同团(The Jam Band)的贝斯手Tom Hamilton,打算组成一个三人的团.Tyler同时还担任鼓手,后来Tyler邀请他高中时的同学 Joey Kramer加入担任鼓手.而另一位吉 他手Brad Whitford则是在团员们决定搬进波士顿的一间公寓后才加入.他们曾考虑过的团名有The Hookers,Spike Jones,..等.最后在鼓手Kramer的建议下才正式定名为AEROSMITH.首度公演是在Nipmuc公立高中,演奏了包括John Lennon,The Rolling Stones以及The yardbirds等作品.
1972年8月据称CBS哥伦比亚唱片公司以十二万五千美元签下AEROSMITH,而当天晚上Atlantic唱片公司则拒绝了与AEROSMITH签约的机会.1973年10月,同名专辑 《AEROSMITH》(亦为第一张专辑)进入流行排行榜166名,之后他们展开巡回演唱会支援 Mahavishnu管旋乐团和Mott The Hoople 乐团的演出.这张专辑后来获得RIAA美国唱片工业协会颁发双白金唱片,1974年大部分的时间他们都在巡回全美演唱,支援The Kinks,Mott The Hoople以及Sha Na Na等团的演出,同年他们发行专辑《Get Your Wings》并翻唱了Yardbirds的名曲《Train Kept A Rolling》,结果成为该曲的经典本.1976年 专辑《Aerosmith》重新进入美国流行排行榜,达到21名.重新发行的单曲《Dream On》;名列第六.1977年单曲《Walk This Way》在美国拿到第十名.1979年参加于克里夫兰市立体育场的"世界摇滚"演唱会,会后主唱Steve和吉他手Perry因为意见严重不合,导致Perry离团并由Jimmy Crespo取而代之,而另一吉他手Whitford也于1980年离去,由Pick Dufay?取代。然后于同年发行了该团的精选集《Aerosmith\'s Greatest Hits》销售达六白金.1984年一次在波士顿的演唱会后台,Perry和Whitford竟出现了,并且表达想回团的意愿.1985年,AEROSMITH据说以五张唱片,七百万美金的条件与Geffen唱片签约,1987年的《Permanent Vacation》专辑,成为首度打开美国大门的作品.而单曲《Dude(Looks Likes A Lady)》成为他们七年来首度打进美国流行单曲榜前二十名的作品.知名的重金属团体Guns N\' Roses曾于1988年AEROSMITH年度乐团全美巡回演唱会上担任暖场团.1989年8月19日,主唱Tyler和吉他手Perry在与BonJovi同台表演中,合唱《Walk This Way》接著于11月24日起,展开了他们十二年来首度欧洲巡回演唱会.1990年3月,AEROSMITH的名字被列入洛杉矶日落大道的摇滚人行道上,并被滚石乐评票选为1989年年度最佳重金属乐团.在四月于波士顿举行的SKC音乐奖得奖名单中,Perry获选为杰出吉他手,Hamilton被选为最佳贝斯手,而《PUMP》专辑则为杰出流行/摇滚专辑《Janie\'s Got A Gun》则为杰出歌曲.AEROSMITH当然也获选了杰出流行/摇滚团体的奖项.
同年六月,他们和 Warrant, Black Crows 和Matalic 共同于加拿大多伦多举行的重金属演唱会理表演.接著于摇滚乐谈的盛事Monsters Of Rock音乐节中登台演唱.然后AEROSMITH于10月在澳洲结束了共计在15个国家多达163站,吸引300万人次观众的《Pump》全球巡回表演.专辑《Pump》的销售量也超越了400万张,而25年来所有的唱片总销售量也突破2500万张.1991年的全美音乐奖中,他们又获得最受欢迎/摇滚团体,以及最受欢迎重金属/重摇滚艺人奖项.又在葛莱美颁奖典礼中赢得了最佳摇滚团体,然后在与Geffen仍有合约下,和SONY预先签了一份四张唱片的合约,并于1995年生效,据称sony预先支付1000万美金当作签约条件.而每张唱片还可收22%的版税.
1993年,一如往常的,AEROSMITH在波士顿音乐奖中大出风头,得到杰出摇滚乐团,杰出男声,以及RightTo Rock奖项.而专辑《Get A Grip》在英国得到亚军席次,在美夺得榜首,AEROSMITH的名字被镶在一个26寸的黄铜制星星上,荣耀地成为波士顿Tower Records名人大道的一部分.重回老东家---哥伦比亚唱片公司后的首张专辑《Nine Lives》终于在1997年3月问市,不仅承袭了一贯的摇滚创作精神,又溶入了属于1997年的现代感.在这张专辑中Perry的吉他狂热与Steve身怀戏剧张力的歌声互相对话,而纵贯全场的鲜活节奏则构筑出前进基线,单曲《Falling In Love (Is Hard On The Knees)》首周进榜即在Billboard摇滚歌曲榜上名列季军,之后并荣登冠军宝座称霸三周之久.5月 SONY Music再度整理出一张AEROSMITH的精选集《Greatest Hits 1977--1988》,完整的纪录AEROSMITH达到今日巨星地位之前的辛勤耕耘,所以,如果对AEROSMITH于世界末日电影原声带中的嘶哑情歌无法自己的话,不妨再深入他们的重金属摇滚音乐殿堂,细细聆听那介于天使与恶魔的独特嗓音
